Learn About a New Town by Meeting the People

Seems like a no brainer right? You're considering uprooting yourself and your family and moving to a new town or neighborhood - wouldn't it make sense to talk to some folks who live there? And yet not many people do this. Take the time to get some real inside knowledge, especially if your trying to decide between a couple of different places - you'll be amazed at what you'll learn.

Talk to people who have owned homes there for several years. These folks can give you a good sense for what the neighborhood is really like to live in. They can also give you some insight into the ups and downs of being a homeowner there.

Pick people in a similar life situation to yours. If you have kids, find someone with kids. If you are retiring, find a retired person. If you have a dog, find a dog-owner

  • Ask them why they chose this place.
  • Ask them why they are still here.
  • Ask them how it compares to their previous location.
  • Ask them for an honest opinion on what could be improved.
  • Ask about how the area is for (kids, dogs, retirement) specifically.
  • Ask them if they are planning to stay.

How to find people

  • Ask your realtor to help find a couple of people for you to meet
  • Meet the neighbors of any one of the properties you are considering

If you have kids, go to the local school or recreational area and talk to a parent.

Not only does talking to people give you a real feeling for the area, you begin to create your network, which is so essential when you move to a new place. Who knows, the person you speak to may become your new best friend.
