The Difference between Renting a Single Family Home vs. an Apartment
Should you rent a single-family home or should you rent an apartment? This is a question that many people face. The answer is that you should evaluate your situation and then make the best choice based on your needs.
How Much Space Do You Need?
If you have specific needs for space, then you will probably want to rent a home. Maybe you need more bedrooms than the standard apartment offers. Maybe you need garage space to house the motorcycle that you are restoring. Perhaps you have children and want an enclosed yard for them to play in, or you have pets that need to have space to run. If you don't need a lot of space, however, an apartment may be a better choice for you.
Location, Location, Location
Location can also be a concern when looking for a place to rent. If you want to be close to your job or your favorite hang-outs, you need to rent something in the immediate area. Apartments tend to be in more commercial areas, while single family homes for rent are usually in residential areas. It all depends on what type of neighborhood you want to live in. If you have kids that are going to walk to school, you definitely want to be in a residential area. On the other hand, if you want to be within walking distance of the hippest night-clubs, an apartment located downtown is probably a better choice.
Amenities Anyone?
What kind of amenities do you want? If you want a pool, sauna, exercise room, clubhouse, etc. then you should probably look into renting an apartment. Most single family homes for rent don't include pools, exercise rooms or other amenities. On the other hand, homes do often come with things like yards, garages and extra space that might be more your style.
Privacy Please!
Your needs for privacy should also play into your decision. Apartments are generally less private than homes. In an apartment, you will probably have someone living on the other side of the wall, or above or below you. Noise from your neighbors and people going in and out at all hours are something you have to contend with when you rent an apartment. There is usually not much in the way of yards, either. If you are young, single and want to meet people, this situation can be great for you! However, if you prefer more privacy because you are writing the Great American Novel or you don't like your neighbors knowing all your business, a house is probably better for you.
Maintenance
If you rent a home, you might be responsible for taking care of the yard. If you have a green thumb, this could be perfect for you. If you hate the very idea of running a lawnmower, apartments do not have maintenance requirements for tenants. All of the maintenance is done by someone else.
Price
In most cases, apartments are cheaper to rent than single family homes. So if money is a factor for you, then you must decide what you can afford in addition to what you want. Still, if you want a certain type of living arrangement, you can generally find it if you look hard enough and are willing to compromise on some things.
