Holiday Decorating Considerations for Home Sellers
We've officially entered the holiday decorating season. For some, it’s a favorite time of year - a time to be creative and express their love of the holidays. As a home seller, you’re already stressed and busy with selling your home – should you make the extra effort to decorate your home for the holidays? Here are a few things you should consider about decorating this holiday season.
- Keep the focus on your home, its features and its benefits. This will help you sell your home more quickly.
- If you decorate, try using small, simple decorations that highlight aspects of your home. This is not the time to use large and/or attention-grabbing decorations.
- Remember that your prospective buyers may have different spiritual beliefs and/or celebrate the holidays in a different manner than you.
- Consider what needs to happen if you sell your home quickly. Use decorations that are easily disposed of, or ones that can quickly be taken down and stored.
- If you typically have a Christmas tree, your best choice is a small one which will allow prospective buyers to view your home without feeling cramped. Keep the tree watered and regularly sweep up any fallen needles
- Opt for simple tree decorations
- Consider where you place the Christmas tree – in front of the window will block light and the prospective buyer won’t be able to get a good look at the yard
- Be sure any light displays are turned off during visits from prospective buyers
- All holiday decorations should be taken down promptly after the holiday is over
- Consider asking your selling agent to postpone any showings at times you are expecting to have relatives or company staying over (likely to be less clutter)
- Consider displaying a few photos that show your home and it’s landscaping/foliage during the Spring and Summer
- Be sure to discuss your decoration choices with your selling agent. They may have additional suggestions and it should help to avoid any surprises.
