Landscaping Tips
Whether you have a new yard or one that’s already established, it helps to keep a few things in mind when it comes to landscaping your yard successfully.
- Always have a plan. You need to decide ahead of time what you want to do with your yard and how you want it to look. Put your backyard needs before the wants. This does not mean that your plan will not change over time, but if you don't have a landscaping plan, your yard could end up looking disorganized.
- Your landscape should always reflect your lifestyle. If you don't like to do yard work, or have little time to do it, you will want a yard that is low-maintenance. However, if you are the kind of person that likes to putter around your garden, choose a landscaping plan that will allow you to indulge this hobby. Your yard is really a reflection of you!
- Adapt your landscaping plan to your climate. This means choosing plants, trees and shrubs that are going to thrive in your climate. A palm tree may not work in below freezing temperatures regardless of how much you want it to.
- Choose plants and accessories that fit in with your yard layout. What works for a flat layout may not work for one with hills and rocks. You don't want to fight against the natural flow and shape of the yard. You want to find a way to go with it and make it work for you.
- Choose some trees or features to anchor your yard. These are things that will fit into your long-term plans for the yard, not something you will need to replant or replace each season. Trees are great because they give you shade, privacy and a sense of structure to your yard.
- Decide whether to do it on your own or hire a professional landscaping designer. Many resources are available to help do-it-yourself types tackle their landscaping projects, and many people find that they enjoy doing the work on their own. There is also something to be said for hiring a professional with an eye for detail, however. This is a personal decision and you must decide which is right for you.
- Most landscape designers offer free consultations. You may want to take advantage of this before you decide whether or not you can handle the work on your own.
- Finally, get your entire family involved and excited. If everyone realizes that they will be using the yard, they will be more open to the idea of working on it and making it come to life.
