Find an Electrician

Hiring an electrician is usually necessary if you need any type of electrical work done. While some people do have some electrical wiring experience, it is always safer to get a professional when you come across electrical problems or need updates.

The best way to find and hire a great electrician is through the recommendation of a friend, neighbor or family member. There are also a variety of online services that will help you find one. And of course, the Yellow Pages are full of electrician listings. Check out your classifieds as well for local electricians. Either way, it's a good idea to talk to several different electricians so that you can get an idea of pricing and who has the most experience with your particular type of project.

The first question to ask when looking for an electrician is whether they are licensed or not. Because licensed electricians go through rigorous training and education, they are much more qualified to handle any electrical task you can throw at them. In many cases, if you have a problem, your property insurance will not pay for damages if the work that caused it was done by an unlicensed electrician.

You also need to find out if the electrician is insured. Electrician insurance protects both you and the electrician from having to pay out of pocket for any damages resulting from the electrical work.

A good electrician should be able to provide you with references of customers he has worked with in the past. This is especially important if you are going to have a large or complicated project done. You want to make sure that the electrician is dependable and does quality work from the beginning.

Before you allow any electrician to start work, you need to get a written estimate for labor and parts - it should include an outline of the exact type of work to be done. Ask the electrician to check with you before proceeding on any work if the charges fall outside the scope of the estimate.

Finding an electrician does not have to be difficult - you simply have to spend a little time doing some research. If you're lucky, you can find someone to work with not just on one project, but throughout your entire home ownership.
