Nicknamed the “Natural State”, Arkansas never fails to call attention to its natural beauty and natural environment. Its natural resources are also plenty, with abundant water, forests of quick growing pines and valuable hardwoods and deposits of oil, natural gas, and many other minerals.

Until the 1950s, Arkansas was primarily an agricultural state with farming as a chief source of income. It thus, experienced a large population decline because many left in search of better livelihood. Things rapidly changed, and by the 1990s Arkansas gained an economy thriving in manufacturing and service sectors, as well as extensive tourism. Today, Arkansas survives up a good share of special historical exhibits, war battlefields and museums for history buffs to revel in.

The diverse geography of Arkansas ranges from the mountainous regions of Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains to the eastern lowlands along the Mississippi River. The lowlands are better known as the Delta and Grand Prairie. It is the land of mountainous valleys, thick forests and fertile plains. The abundance of water is a distinctive feature of the state, with the entire state draining southeastward to the Mississippi River.

Arkansas’ climate is generally humid and subtropical, although it is known for occasional extreme weather. Most summers are long and fairly hot while winters are short and fairly mild. Although snow is rare, rain is plenty. Most of it comes during the winter and spring and at times is so heavy as to cause flooding.

Arkansas is the first US states where diamonds were found and still attracts a large number of tourists who hope to find a gem or two in its rich caverns and ravines. Those who fail to find their fortune in stone will find it through outdoor adventure, wild caving experiences, and scenic trekking. Meanwhile, Arkansas is also abundant in charming small towns.
