Perhaps the best way to refer to Connecticut is as the state with variety. Its variations in landscape and culture are striking: from the wealthy estates of Fairfield to the rolling mountains and horse farms of Litchfield Hills. While rural Connecticut happens to be one of the few places in the U.S. that have managed to retain the charm of colonial New England, the rest is primarily a modern urban and suburban state.

Connecticut was the fifth of the original thirteen states to ratify the Constitution and it played an important role in the development of the United States. Many of the nation’s early industrial advances, including the development of mass production, first took place in Connecticut. It was also the major supplier of weapons during the American Revolution and other wars.

Connecticut may be small, but it is not lacking in regional variations. The northwest part of the state is the highest, with land gradually sloping southeastward across long ridges and rolling hills. The Connecticut River runs through the center of the state and flows through the Long Island Sound out to the Atlantic Ocean. The state is abundant in forests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and sandy shores.

The climate of Connecticut is humid continental. Seasonal extremes are common due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Winter in Connecticut is very cold with extreme temperatures and snowfall across the entire state. Summer is generally hot and humid, spring has frequent rainfall, and autumn is mild with the most romantic foliage you will find anywhere in the United States.

Connecticut was home to many of the nation’s industrial advances, including the development of mass production. Its cities and towns were identified by the products they produce: i.e. hats in Danbury, brass in Waterbury, thread in Colchester, etc. It is unfortunate that Connecticut is often known as the state of the overtaxed, boring rich people because its historical attractions, natural beauty and charm are infinite.
