Tucked between Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the Atlantic, across the Delaware Bay from New Jersey, tiny Delaware is a relaxed enclave amongst the busy eastern seaboard. Proud of its miles of sandy beaches and tax-free shopping, Delaware is an inviting place that exists at its own tranquil pace.
While Delaware was, like the other middle states, initially tepid in its support for the American Revolution, the colony was nonetheless home to many fervent patriots and became the first member of the United States. Delaware was first to ratify both the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, earning its nickname as “the First State.”
North of Wilmington and Newark, Delaware is covered in rolling hills, but the great majority of the state lies on a level sandy plain, part of the peninsula created by the Chesapeake Bay. Delaware is a coastal state through and through, the entire state just a short drive from the ocean. Delaware lives by the sea’s moderating effects and steady rhythm.
Delaware is a transitional zone between the subtropical climate that characterizes the South and a continental climate. This means that despite is diminutive size (it’s the second-smallest state), Delaware displays a surprising variety of flora and fauna. The southern part of the state is milder than the North, receiving far less snow, while summers are hot in humid across the state.
Delaware has no national parks, monuments or historic sites, nor an international airport, but it does offer miles of relaxing coastline. Other than Dover, the capital and Wilmington, which lives in Philadelphia’s orbit, the busiest place in Delaware is always the beach. The cities on the Rehoboth Bay in particular attract visitors from across the region, a quieter escape than nearby Ocean City, MD.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge, connecting the state to New Jersey, is the longest twin span suspension bridge in the world and a fitting symbol for the state itself. The First State is defined by its relationship with the ocean, a quiet seaboard that invites locals and visitors alike to kick back and enjoy the waves.
