The Hawkeye State is home to acres of beautiful rolling countryside ensconced between two of America’s most legendary rivers, the Mississippi and the Missouri. The home of the Iowa Political Caucuses boasts a strong agricultural base and a history of rugged individualism.

Originally home to as many as 17 different Indian tribes, Iowa achieved statehood in 1846, making it the 29th State in the Union. During the mid-1800’s thousands of settlers rode the railroads into the Hawkeye State to make their mark in the new frontier.

Over time, Iowa became home to large numbers of immigrants looking for work on the railroads, farms and coal mines. As the 20th century evolved, agriculture became one of the mainstays of the Iowan business landscape.

Iowa has a rich tradition of strong educational systems including the state universities (Iowa State and University of Iowa).

Currently home to more than 2.9mm people, Iowa’s population boomed in the late 1800’s with the agricultural growth of the state. Of late the state’s population has grown a slower rate than that of the US as a whole, 1.4% vs 5.3%, from 2000 to 2005.

Iowa is bordered by Minnesota to the North, Missouri to the South, Wisconsin to the East and South Dakota to the west. It offers a diverse range of geography from the Great Lakes in the Northwest…to wide western prairie…to vast banks of the Mississippi. This 26th largest state is known for a mix of rolling hills and wide open plains.

The Mississippi and Missouri combine with some of the most fertile top soil in the world in Iowa, which makes its strong agricultural heritage no surprise – and ensures its place as the number one corn producer in the US.

Iowa is a “four season” state with a significant variance in temperature based on time of year. A typical year brings the state 266 sunny or partly sunny days and 99 cloudy days.

Home to The Big Treehouse in Marshalltown (a 10 level house complete with running water, music and power), Indian artifacts at the State of Iowa Historical Village in Des Moines, and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright in Mason City – The Hawkeye State offers something for everyone.
