It may be hard for some to think about Idaho in terms of anything other than potatoes, but it is a state of striking physical diversity and natural beauty. Many of the state’s natural resources are the basis of Idaho’s economic prosperity.

Evidence shows that humans may have been present in Idaho as long as 14,500 years ago. Most of Idaho’s history lies with the Native American tribes, the Lewis and Clarke expedition and Oregon Trail. For a long time, Idaho was claimed by both the US and the UK but after much tribulation, it achieved statehood in 1890. In the 21st century, Idaho has transformed itself from a state of agriculture and tourism to a hub of science and technology.

Idaho geography consists of a rugged landscape with some of the largest unspoiled natural areas in the nation. It is primarily a mountainous state – much of which is covered by the Rocky Mountains. Scenic areas and natural resources are in abundance in Idaho. It has snow-capped mountain ranges, rapids, placid lakes and steep canyong. Idaho has many lakes and rivers and its abundant water supply plays a large role in agricultural development and thus the economy.

Climate in Idaho varies greatly across the state depending on proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Summers in Idaho are usually hot and well over one hundred degrees. Winters are cold, but temperatures below zero are unusual.

Idaho is purely heaven for outdoor enthusiasts. Its mountains, lakes, rivers and wilderness provide excellent ski areas as well as summer resorts. Hunters travel from all over the world to search for game in Idaho’s backcountry, some of which is accessible only by foot or by horse.
