With a long and vibrant history, Kansas is home to the geographic center of the contiguous United States and the World’s Largest Ball of Twine. Rich in agriculture and manufacturing - this 34th state of the Union gets its name from the Native American word “Kansa”, which meant “People of the South Winds” presumably paying homage to the occasional tornados & thunderstorms the state experiences.

The Louisiana Purchase brought Kansas into the United States in 1803 and it was originally part of the Missouri Territory. Kansas officially became the 34th state in the union in 1861. During the years leading up to and after its statehood, Kansas saw a significant amount of conflict as it had become an outpost for the abolitionist movement. Later that century and into the 1900’s Kansas became a center of the Wild West era with Wild Bill Hickock and Wyatt Earp each adding to their legends in that state.

Kansas since has emerged as a strong agricultural and manufacturing state with beef, oil and wheat at the core of its output. Kansas leads the US in wheat production and is the second largest beef cattle producer in the US. The state is also home to several large, branded companies including Sprint, Hallmark and Goodyear.

Currently home to more than 2.7mm people, Kansas’s population boomed in the late 1800’s with the agricultural growth and immigration to the state. Wichita and Kansas City are the two largest metro areas in the state, representing a significant percent of the population.

The state consists of large flowing plains and gradual rolling hills and much of the state’s border consists of the Missouri river which runs almost 75 miles along the northeast section of Kansas.

Kansas enjoys a full seasonal mix with cold winters and warm summers. It is often characterized as the 10th sunniest state in the country. The spring often sees thunderstorms and the occasional tornado (remember the Wizard of Oz).

Kansas sits squarely in the middle of the United States and is as far from the Pacific Ocean as it is from the Atlantic. The actual geographic center of the United States sits in Osborne County. Kansas was the first state to outlaw alcohol during the prohibition years.
