A distinct blend of culture, cuisine and climate makes Louisiana a truly unique environment which has seen significant strides to recovery since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Louisiana sits atop the Gulf of Mexico and borders Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

Like most of the country, Louisiana was originally populated by Native Americans before being colonized by both the Spanish and French during the 17th century. In 1803 the United States purchased Louisiana from France (who had acquired the rest of it from Spain) as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

Louisiana is a large agricultural producer whose output includes seafood and cotton. Tourism also makes up a significant part of the state’s economy with New Orleans and its annual Mardi Gras celebration playing a large part.

The state blends a mix of Creole and Cajun cultures which manifests itself in the cuisine, music and lifestyle.

Louisiana boasts a wide range rivers, lakes, swamps and wetlands with a significant chunk of the state being made up of coastal lands sitting atop the Gulf of Mexico. The state also boasts a large national and state run parks network.

Louisiana has a sub-tropical climate which consists of hot summers and mild winters with some precipitation throughout the year. As evidenced by Katrina, it is also susceptible to hurricanes.
