Situated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US, with its Eastern border on the Atlantic Ocean - the State of Maryland is the official “donator” of land to the US capital, Washington, DC.

Maryland became the seventh state in the union in 1789 after having been one of the original 13 colonies to revolt against the British in the American Revolution. Although Maryland was for the most part a pro-slavery state, it did not secede from the union during the Civil War.

Given its proximity to Washington, DC, Maryland has emerged as a hub of defense, aerospace and science research and education. The state is also home to the Port of Baltimore which services a significant amount of the inbound and outbound shipping on the East Coast.

Maryland also holds a signifant amount of food processing and production as well as agricultural production.

The state’s main airport is Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (renamed for the Supreme Court justice).

Maryland is home to approximately 5.6 million inhabitants with most of that population living in the central region of the state in the Baltimore & Washington Metro area.

Nicknamed “America in Miniature”, Maryland offers a very diverse assortment of geographic elements. Marshlands, rolling hills, wetlands, deep forests and beautiful coastlines are all present.

Maryland receives a significant amount of precipitation, and experiences all four seasons. Winters are typically milder than the states farther north on the East Coast.

With an average household income of $61,000, Maryland is currently the second wealthiest state in the US.
