From its beautiful coastline to its dense forests and mountains – Maine has something for everyone. This home to agriculture, ports and tourism boasts a wide array of business and leisure opportunities hence earning it the nickname “Vacationland.”

Maine was colonized by the French in 1604 and like all the New England states played an important part in the Revolutionary war, and at the formation of the United States was originally part of Massachusetts. In 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise, Maine became the 23rd state in the Union (in part to play a free state balance to Missouri which was being admitted as a slave state).

Maine boasts a rich maritime history as it once served as a major center for shipbuilding which supplied much of the country. It has always also represented a key link between the US and Canada for trade and tourism.

Maine is home to approximately 1.3 million inhabitants and attracts a significant amount of tourists during the spring, summer and fall months.

Maine is bordered by the Atlantic to the East and Canada to the north. It shares a large border with New Hampshire to the West and South. The state enjoys a diverse and rugged landscape including rocky coasts, large networks of lakes and rivers and dense forests & mountains.

Home to all four seasons, Maine enjoys some of the most spectacular foliage in the fall of all the New England states. The state experiences very cold winters and hot summers.

Maine enjoys several unique characteristics. It is the only state to border just one other state, and it is also the only state with one syllable in its name.
