Despite seasonal temperature swings from sub-zero winters to hot and humid summers, Minnesota consistently ranks at or near the top of all states for quality of life. Contributing factors to this success might be the year-round recreation opportunities, or the gigantic, indoor Mall of America. Perhaps, for this politically moderate state, it’s not the extremes that matter, but an atmosphere that produces the dry wit of Prairie Home Companion with native son Garrison Keillor. Whatever the real reasons are, Minnesota is a northern gem.
Prior to European settlement, Minnesota was home to Native Americans including the Anishinaabe and the Sioux. French fur traders arrived in the 1600’s, beginning a transformation toward European domination and statehood in 1858. Minnesota’s early economy was dominated by logging and farming and evolved, following a national trend, from farming to industrial development and finally technology. Today’s state population is about 5.1 million with three out of four residents living in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul. While the state’s ethnic composition is mostly of Western European descent, that’s diversifying with a growing Hispanic population and other groups from around the world.
With the states highest elevation of 2,301 ft at Eagle Mountain and a low point of 602 ft at the shore of Lake Superior, Minnesota is a land of rolling hills, prairies and thousands of lakes. In fact, known as “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” this wet state is appropriately the home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca. With cold winters and hot summers, Minnesota’s seasonal extremes span 174 degrees. That type of weather demands all sorts of seasonal clothing that you can, of course, purchase at the Mall of America.
From rich natural beauty to an internationally recognized arts community; from low crime to high scoring public schools; from low real estate prices to high probabilities for wintertime ice fishing – Minnesota has lots to offer.
