Rich with history, strong traditions and a bright feature ahead of it, Missouri welcomes thousands of visitors to discover all it has to offer. It is known as The Center State for playing an important and central role in agriculture, manufacturing and transportation.

When it was admitted to the Union in 1821, Missouri was known as the western frontier. Soon however, it became known as “The Gateway to the West” because of the routes that led from Missouri to California and Oregon. It was also the starting and returning point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. During the Civil War, the state seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America. Sentiment throughout the state was split as Union and Confederate forces fought throughout the state. In 1865, rather than surrendering, Missouri’s highest ranking military officer led his army to Mexico while Missouri rejoined the Union.

Missouri consists of three different physiographic provinces of the United States: the Central Lowland, the Ozark Upland, and the Gulf Coast Plain, each of which has a distinct combination of topography, soils, and natural vegetation. The two largest rivers in the state are those that define its boundaries: The Mississippi and The Missouri River. Although Missouri is currently considered as part of the Midwest, it is historically considered a Southern State and many people in rural areas and cities farther south typically consider themselves as southerners.

Missouri climate is humid continental. It is mostly humid, with very hot summers that include heat waves and varying winter temperatures. Cold waves are also common, but do not last as long as the heat waves. Missouri often sees extremes in temperature due to its location in the interior of the US. Rainfall is also common throughout Missouri in the months of spring.

Only in Missouri will you find “larger than life attractions” as you climb to the top of the Gateway Arch or find yourself underground in one of Missouri’s many caves. Many of which are untouched and pristine, Missouri’s natural areas may still be one of its best kept secrets.
