Mississippi beckons its visitors with its exceptionally warm climate and rich soil. The people are hospitable and the forests are abundant with wildlife. It has fully transformed from racial tension to good old southern hospitality.

Mississippi was admitted into the Union in 1817. Cotton was king starting in the 1850s and plantation owners throughout the state became very wealthy. But it was the severe wealth imbalance and need for a large slave population that played a heavy roll in state politics and support for secession. Mississippi seceded from the Union in 1861 and was not readmitted until 1870. Being the “Deep South” with severe racial segregation, many emigrated in the 20th century. Mississippi was a focus of the American Civil Rights Movement and gained a reputation as a reactionary state. Relations between the races have shaped Mississippi history for hundreds of year and only recently has it been able to boast acceptance and diversity.

Most of Mississippi is comprised of lowland, with the highest point only 806 feet above sea level. Most of the state is part of the East Gulf Coastal Plain and the rest is part of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. The Coastal Plain is mostly fertile black earth while the Alluvial Plain also has rich soil stemming from the floodwaters of the Mississippi River.

Mississippi’s climate is warm humid subtropical with long summers and short, mild winters. Temperatures average about eighty degrees in July and forty-eight degrees in January. Summer temperatures are similar across the state while winter temperatures vary significantly depending on proximity to Mississippi Sound. Hurricanes and tornados are not uncommon along the Gulf of Mexico and are sometimes devastating. Rain and thunderstorms are common in the southern part of the state.

The name “Mississippi” is translated from Native American folklore and means “Father of the Waters”. Indeed, it is named for the Mississippi River, which forms its western boundary.
