Montana is Big Sky country, a beautiful land of open spaces where the imposing Rockies meet the wide expanse of the Great Plains. The fourth-largest state in the union, Montana is one of the least populated, which gives its inhabitants plenty of room to breathe and imbues the Treasure State with an isolated beauty that soothes the soul.

The territory that would become Montana was first settled by various Native American groups, including among many others the Crow, Cheyenne and Blackfeet. After the Lewis and Clark expedition, the discovery of copper and gold in the mid-1800s allowed Montana to become a U.S. territory (1864) and later achieve statehood (1889).

Montana was also the scene of Custer’s last stand at the Battle of Little Bighorn, one of the last attempts by Native Americans to keep their lands. Today, the battle site is one of the state’s most popular attractions. The state’s most important cities are Billings, Bozeman and Butte.

Montana is a land of lofty mountains, but also of prairie, buttes and badlands. The state’s name comes from the Spanish montaña, and the central and western parts of the state are covered with at least 77 named mountain ranges, part of the northern Rocky Mountains.

On the eastern side of the Continental Divide that cuts diagonally across the state, however, Montana is mostly open prairie. The sparsely populated plains are mostly wide, sweeping grasslands, but they’re dotted with “island” mountain ranges and scenic badlands that give the Big Sky country its name.

Like just about everything in Montana, the economy is centered on the land itself. Agriculture, lumber and minerals are the state’s most important industries, with tourism also a major source of revenue. People come from the world over to enjoy the sense of freedom found under Montana’s clear, expansive skies, not to mention the beauty of Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.

Montana, a large state with a small population, is the place to relax under wide-open skies and enjoy the outdoors. Elk and other wild creatures roam freely here, a reminder of the untamed spirit that abides in the state’s mountains and prairies and still drives many of its people.
