It may be one of the smallest states in the US, but New Jersey also happens to be one of the most diversified and most urbanized states. From history to mountains, to wildlife refuges, to city lights, New Jersey is a land of contrasts that keeps its residents and tourists on the edge of their toes. It’s also home to the first dinosaur skeleton, first drive-in movie, first blueberry and first college football game.

New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 11,000 years before the Swedes and the Dutch settled here in the early 1600s. New Jersey was an important site during the American Revolution War. Although New Jersey was not home to any Civil War battles, more than 80,000 of its residents enlisted in the Northern Army. Several of the New Jersey working class cities helped to drive the Industrial Revolution. And New Jersey was the center for war production during WWI and WWII.

New Jersey has an oblong shape, with a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The New Jersey Northwest is extremely mountainous while the southern half of the state is sandy and flat. Regardless, New Jersey is occupied by 4 main land regions; the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the New England Upland, and the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region.

New Jersey’s climate is temperate, with warm-to-hot humid summers and cool-to-cold winters. Snow is plenty during the winter and although not very strong, hurricanes sometimes hit Jersey. Temperatures vary greatly from the North to the South.

New Jersey is a land of contrasts for many reasons. Not only is it one of the most urbanized of the states, with 21 of it’s counties being classified as “metropolitan” by the census, but it also has its share of wilderness areas and mountains. While being at the forefront of technology, industrial research and development, it’s also known as the Garden State because of the importance it gives to farming. Only in New Jersey will you find farmers selling fresh fruit and vegetables on the side of the road next to booming high-tech firms.
