Home to the famed Las Vegas, this “Silver State” sits squarely in the middle of California, Utah, Idaho, Arizona and Oregon. This state has experienced extremely fast population growth during the last 50 years – and in fact it is currently the fastest growing state in the US. Nevada is known for much more than just its gambling mecca. It is one of only a few states in the country with no personal state income tax, it is home to the Hoover Dam, and legend has it that Area 51 (whose existence the US government has always denied) is located at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

Nevada became the 36th state in the country in 1864 (its entering the union played a key part in the campaign to re-elect Abraham Lincoln following the civil war).

As is clear from its nickname, “The Silver State”, Nevada’s economy has deep roots in the mining industry. Although it is actually gold mining that make up the majority of revenues from that industry. Livestock also plays a large role in the state’s industry with both cattle and sheep being major components.

Finally, Nevada is one of the only states in the country to offer legalized gambling. And as a result, tourism is a major cornerstone of the state’s economy with Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe all benefiting.

Nevada enjoys vast mountain ranges running from North to South, with much of them along its largest border – that with California to the West. It also holds several large deserts, including the famous Mojave Desert to the South.

As of 2005, Nevada had slightly over 2.4 million inhabitants. That number has grown 20% since the year 2000. The majority of the state’s residents live in the bordering/suburban areas of Las Vegas encompassed by Clark County.
