Although it's known as a Commonwealth, there is nothing “common” about Pennsylvania. Its roads pass wooded forests, picturesque bridges and quaint towns with antique shops. These roads lead to sandy beaches along Lake Eerie and historic places like Gettysburg. Pennsylvania’s physical and cultural diversity is striking and leaves lots of room for imagination.

It is unlikely that you will find a state richer in historical landmarks. The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Valley Forge and Gettysburg are all reminders of Pennsylvania’s historical past. The founder of Pennsylvania was William Penn, a rebellious youth who joined the Quakers and helped many of them escape persecution in England. Pennsylvania was the second state to ratify the Constitution, in 1787. Legislature and powerful leaders met throughout the state in various buildings. And as with most Northern states, Pennsylvania had a strong sentiment against slavery and the Underground Railroad was active in the state. The Battle of Gettysburg, the major turning point of the Civil War, also took place in Pennsylvania.

Despite a fairly large population, Pennsylvania is a small state. It is divided into seven different regions based upon different landforms. Philadelphia is located on the Coastal Plain, which is vast, low and sandy.

Pennsylvania has a climate which is generally humid continental. Despite its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, its westerly winds sweep the weather eastward and weather does not get out of control. There are distinct variations between seasons are present and temperature is directly affected by altitude. Lowland Pennsylvania has long summers and mild winters. Upland Pennsylvania has short summers and severe winters.

Pennsylvania prides itself on its love for recreation. It is home to the nation’s first zoo, boasts some of the finest museums in the country, offers free admission to all 121 state parks, hosts many music festivals, has plenty of amusement parks, and is of course a great place for all kinds of sporting activities.
