The Texas state motto is, “It’s like a whole other country” and believe it or not, it really is! Not only is Texas the size of Ohio, Indiana and all of the New England and Mid Atlantic states combined, but its geographic, cultural and economic diversity makes it difficult to place this state into any particular category.

Six flags have flown over Texan soil (French, Spanish, Mexican, “Republic of Texas”, Confederate and U.S.); it is no wonder that Texas has such a diverse and international feel to it. But Texas was part of the Spanish Empire for more than a hundred years and when Texas gained its independence from Spain, it was even part of Mexico before its annexation to the US. From San Antonio southward, architecture, food and festivals have retained the charm of the Hispano-Mexican period.

Texas is the second largest state in the US and covers 7% of all US land. Its vastness allows it to be part of the South as well as the South West and its geography spans a wide range of features. The coast lines are generally flat and low-lying while central regions include several rugged mountain ranges and high dry basins and plateaus. The Rio Grande, Red River and Sabine River all provide natural state lines for Texas.

The climate of Texas varies greatly with each geographic region. Eastern Texas has a humid subtropical climate; central areas have a semiarid climate due to their low latitude, while the coastal areas boast a mild and pleasant climate with fewer extremes in temperature. Texans encounter a few summer hurricanes along the coast and tornados are common in north-central Texas in the spring. While summers are hot throughout the state, winters are generally mild.

Perhaps more than any other state, Texas is known for its positive attitude and friendly people. Clerks speak to you when you walk into a store and random strangers smile when they pass you by. With hospitality and some of the most affordable housing in the US (one can easily get a nice house in an equally nice neighborhood for $150,000), it’s hard to go wrong with Texas.
