Aside from its mountainous terrain and picturesque scenery, The Mountain State is also known for its rich heritage, incomparable beauty and warm hospitality. West Virginia is known for its incredible scenery and abundance of natural resources, and is a popular tourist destination for outdoor fanatics.

West Virginia is the only nation in history that was created by presidential proclamation. The Civil War greatly divided the state, with half of the citizens belonging to the Union and other half to the Confederacy. It was the scene of countless battles but it is also one of the few states where you can not only read about history but actually live it. West Virginia has a great share of historical sites and volunteers, in costume, reenacting events such as The Battle of Scary Creek.

West Virginia is surrounded by irregular boundaries made up of rivers and mountains. It is the only state located entirely within the Appalachian Mountain range. Much of West Virginia land is mountainous and flatlands are scarce. Many forest areas and part of the New River Gorge are under government protection.

Humidity is common in West Virginia, where summers are warm and humid while winters are cold and humid. Mountains are generally cooler than low lands and weather is prone to sudden changes during any time of year all over the state. Half of the rainfall occurs between April and September. Snow may persist for weeks in the higher mountains during the winter but last only a few days elsewhere.

West Virginia is paradise to skiers, rafters, rock climbers, fishers and hunters – how is it that it remains one of the poorest states in the country? It happens to be one of the least urbanized states, with less than half of the population living in cities and towns. But the upside of this is that the countryside is very charming and real estate is highly affordable.
